Gears Tactics is the latest game in the Gears (or Gears of War , as boomers may call it) franchise. A radical departure for the third-person shooter series, Gears Tactics is instead a tactical, turn-based RPG similar to XCOM or the recently released John Wick Hex . So far, it’s also only available on PC, not the Xbox

Gears Tactics, as a prequel, doesn’t answer any of the questions Gears 5 left us with, but is still a tale worth exploring, whether it be for the new characters or the additional context the game provides to the universe. It will also provide many hours of gameplay. Gears Tactics will last players between 20-30 hours, depending on the difficulty. It's a lengthy campaign with an additional Veteran Mode available upon your first completion. Unfortunately, not all activities in Gears Tactics are created equally. That length is split between main and side missions. Main missions are by far the best with impeccable design that forces players to study the battlefield and make smart decisions. It’s here that the gameplay and design come together to create truly fantastic moments that rival the best encounters in the main series. Boss fights particularly stand out as moments that require players to balance positioning, ability usage and range to stay alive and claim victory. Gears Tactics is at its best when playing these missions.

The game also, surprisingly, doesn’t have much to do once the credits roll. Outside of Veteran Mode, which does tweak the formula with modifiers, there are no additional multiplayer or co-op modes to jump into. For a franchise that built itself on robust multiplayer and co-op options, Gears Tactics feels light on modes. While it may focus too much on side quests, it makes up for it with solid gameplay. Like a traditional tactics style game, Gears Tactics is played from a top-down perspective with players taking turns to maneuver around the map, attack and set up tactical positions. During your turn, each character gets three actions to move, take cover, fire on enemies, set up overwatch, use abilities or execute downed enemies.


One of the big reasons Gears Tactics is able to make the combat feel so intense is due to the game's incredible sound design. Every gunshot is delivered with booming authority, and explosions literally rock the battlefield. Squad chatter often offers helpful hints in the midst of battle, and all the classic Gears of War series sound effects are there and accounted for as well. Gears Tactics ' incredible sound design is combined with better than average visuals that occasionally suffer from texture pop-in, but otherwise look just as great as the core ser


One of the bigger surprises from Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference was the reveal of Gears Tactics , a new turn-based strategy game based on the Gears of War franchise that looked to be borrowing heavily from XCOM . While some hardcore Gears of War fans may not have been sold on the concept initially, anyone that gives it a chance will quickly discover that the Gears of War franchise lends itself quite well to a turn-based tactics g


Speaking of enemies, a highlight of the Gears Tactics experience is definitely its boss fights, which play out like sort of puzzles and feel a little different than the standard combat encounters. Some players may find initial boss fights in Gears Tactics frustrating, but there are often ways that players can make the battle much easier. It's just a matter of figuring out the appropriate squad composition and where they need to send the characters on the battlefi


Something that may be disappointing to players as they play through Gears Tactics , though, is the repetitive level design. There are some levels that almost feel like replicas of one another, and there isn't a ton of visual variety in the stages, either - an issue that is exacerbated by the forced side missi


Since the playable characters in Gears Tactics are constantly becoming stronger, the game has to do a couple of things to stay challenging. For one, there are many missions that restrict who can be used, and when players are doing side missions, they can only use each character in a mission once until the main story advances. This forces players to use some of their lower-leveled soldiers instead of their most powerful allies. Secondly, Gears Tactics is always adding new enemies to the mix that will make players change up their combat strateg

Strategic options don’t stop on the battlefield. In addition to extensive skill trees per class, Gears Tactics features a comprehensive gear system. From weapon parts to armor pieces to grenades, there’s plenty of items to consider as you strive to build your squad. There’s even fun, non-gameplay affecting cosmetics such as changing your gunmetals, adding color or throwing on a pattern. While you can’t alter the main character’s looks, you’re free to change the looks and features of your other squad mates. Gears of War will always be known as a third-person shooter, but Splash Damage has perfectly adapted its mechanics to a tactics game. What you expect from a Gears game (chainsaw bayonets, bayonet charges, emergence holes, brutal finishers, etc.) is all read here with few compromises. This is a Gears game, and it feels exactly right to play.
